We made major changes to our Dietary Services program. We have a new dietary consultant, Marcy DiGregorio, R.D. Marcy has helped us computerize our menu planning in ways that will allow much greater individualization to meet the needs of our residents. Supervisor, Martin Jimenez is very excited about these improvements and the potential they have to improve the wellbeing of our residents. There is a more complete description of our new dietary program in the 2007-08 Annual Report.
If you have a personal story you’d like to share with others about Hillside House or any of our residents, we would love to hear it. We might include it on the site or in our next newsletter. Send it to hillsidehouse@hillsidehousesb.org
on the science front: common treatment to delay labor decreases infant's risk for CP
Preterm infants born to mothers receiving intravenous magnesium sulfate—a common treatment to delay labor—are less likely to develop cerebral palsy than are preterm infants whose mothers do not receive it. Read the full story here.
Facilities Campaign Exceeds Goal
During the last two years, our main residential building has begun to show its age as, one after another, the systems making up its infrastructure, have failed. In July, 2007 the Board of Directors authorized a $125,000 fund-raising campaign to gather the additional funds necessary to insure safety and dependable functioning of our facilities.
This emergency fund drive was named the Facility Maintenance Campaign, and was planned to last one year, until the summer of 2008. The response of Hillside House supporters was so strong and positive that $135,000 was committed before the end of 2007! Thank you!
Leadership was key to the success of the effort. Ellen Brand, mother of Moselle, and Board member Lynn Jones, accepted the roles of campaign co-chairs and, with the other committee members, contacted Hillside House supporters to relay the news of our facility problems.

Committee member Jessika Cardinahl, mother of Sophie, took it upon herself to organize her own campaign among her friends, an effort which resulted in more than $7,000 in gifts from 23 donors.
In total, 58 gifts by individuals, businesses and foundations resulted from the broad-based effort. Since the outset of the campaign, $73,000 of the donated funds has been spent on repairing and upgrading facilities. The most ambitious project was renovating the kitchen facilities, at a cost of more than $30,000. Electrical and sewer breakdowns have also required immediate repair. Already scheduled for 2008 are replacement of all our attic sprinkler heads and completing the upgrade of our hot water circulation system.
The Board and administration of Hillside House are deeply grateful for the generosity of the friends, family members and community supporters of Hillside House. We intend to use the donated funds to insure that we can continue to deliver services safely and efficiently until our Campus Master Plan is approved and completed.
